San Diego Humane Society officials are caring for 78 rats found living in squalid conditions inside a van found parked in an Escondido parking. Escondido Police were called overnight June 1 to a hotel parking lot to investigate a van with expired registration tags and reports of animals living inside. They found the vehicle overflowing with rats that were living inside the dashboard, in and under the seats, beneath the floor liner and inside filthy terrariums. Police towed the vehicle and contacted the Humane Society, whose Humane Law Enforcement officers donned protective gear to begin catching the animals and removing them from the vehicle with food and humane traps.
